Eighteen More Ferry Terminals in India
Eighteen ferry terminals are to be constructed in six Indian cities of Varanasi, Patna, Munger, Bhagalpur, Kolkata and Haldia on the National Waterways-I under the Jal Marg Vikas Project (JMVP).
The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has engaged a consultant for the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the purpose. The consultants have been tasked to identify suitable locations for construction of the ferry terminals.
National Water-way-1 has fixed terminals at GR Jetty-2 (Kolkata), Pakur, Farakka (owned by Farakka Barrage Project) and Patna (Low level and high level). It also have floating terminals in Haldia- 1, Haldia- 2, Kolkata (BISN, Botanical Garden), Shantipur, Swaroopganj, Katwa, Hazardwari, Downstream Farakka, Upstream Farakka, Rajmahal, Sahibganj, Bateshwarsthan, Bhagalpur, Munger, Semaria, Buxar, Ghazipur, Varanasi and Allahabad.
National Water-way-2 fixed terminal's are low and high level jetties at Pandu with BG railway link. IWT cum Ro – Ro terminal at Dhubri (Assam). Hatsingimari,Jogighopa, Pandu, Tezpur, Silghat, Vishwanathghat, Neamati, Bogibeel, Sengajan, Dibrugarh and Oriumghat are floating terminals.
IWAI has already constructed eight permanent terminals on National Water-way-3 viz., Kottapuram, Aluva, Maradu, Vaikkom, Thanneermukkom, Trikkunna-puzha, Kayamkulam and Kollam.
In addition, there are two nos. terminals viz., Bolghatty & Willingdon island has also been developed in Cochin Port Trust limit for container traffic through (Roll-on Roll-off) Ro-Ro /Low-on Low-off (Lo-Lo) service.
